Theo Fox: Take This Call
Thoughts on the Blackhawks taking trade calls on Kirby Dach and what that means in the context of the rebuild. - Theo Fox
Thanks for another interesting topic Theo. I would not take calls on Dach unless as you say at least two top assets for the rebuild are on offer. Would rather keep him and let him understudy with Toews for another year. Although contract demands are another potential issue.
Still like the lines:
Debrincat - Strome - Kane
Reichel - Toews - Dach
for at least the start of next season.
Also from last blog, next to last post - Husso could be a good signing, and also a 2nd-3rd round goalie pick sounds good to add depth.
Will stop repeating myself now - or maybe not. |

Thanks Theo - I agree that KD needs to listen to every call, doesn't mean he has to act on every one. Do you think a deal like Lafferty's (2 yr max) would be acceptable to K. Dach? This way he can be traded at the TDL if that is the direction the team decides, and his contract will attractive to the new team. But I still think we as fans need to understand what the management of this team wants to do. We can speculate all we want, but until we start to see moves or a coach signing we are all guessing. |

Don't want to see the Hawks move on from Dach, I still think there's enough there to for him to be something at some point. That being said, if it came down to moving the cat or Dach for draft capital, I'd rather see Dach head out.
I'd rather have the hawks move a bunch of their defense (like Murph, Stillman, and McCabe) than for them to move any of their young forwards. They've got a decent amount of d prospects that could be ok, but very few forwards. |

The other alarming piece of news was the possible recapture penalties should Keith decide to retire. Obviously, the Oilers would love it as they gain EXTRA cap room which could help them sign Evander kane, and the Hawks get hit with a 5.5 cap hit this year and 2 million next year.
For a guy who ASKED to be traded this should be very interesting to watch in the short and LONG term (should he retire this summer) |

There’s no rule in the NHL CBA forcing a player to retire simply because he hasn’t communicated to the team he’s under contract to that he’s coming back.

True but if you read the articles the Oilers are pushing him to give a response by July 1st so they can prepare for UFA....so this won't be an "injury" forcing him on LTIR. Believe the oilers get an additional 3.4 cap credit on top of the 5.5 cap hit relief for Keith retiring. |

Why would the Blackhawks be hit with the additional $2 mil the following year?

I read the article. The Oiler's can push him all they want. Keith doesn't have to say anything by July 1. Why would they want him to retire? I bet there are other teams in the Northwest that would gladly take Keith for one year. He is still good value for his cap hit. If they want to get back to the Conference Finals, they are better with him than without. Now Smith is another matter.
Plus Keith has alway's said he wanted to play into his 40's |

Believe it's a 7.5 recapture penalty.....spread across 2 years. |

Puckpedia had an article about this last summer after the trade.
https://puckpedia.com/sal...keith-potential-recapture
The total penalty is about 7.4M. Keith's AAV is 5.5M so that would be applied this year and the 1.9M balance next year.

I thought they changed the recapture rule? Maybe I'm wrong but i think the Blackhawks would be on the hook for Keiths current cap hit for the his final year. That would still suck but then again it's not like they don't have room for it |

I simply can't see any Dach trade unless he has asked to be traded.
So, a non-playoff team is hearing some of their names bandied about - it comes with the territory.
How else do they get maximum effort and keep the fan base, or encourage old & new sales of season tickets?
What re-esatblishes the Chicago franchise to a new series of season sellouts?
New hope in the form of draft picks...
"yeah I saw his entire rookie season and was there when it started..." says the guy in the Hawk quarters jersey for the newbie.
They have seen the 'cat, and his skills are not left unnoticed, but, we have seen him....
what gets the seats filled, if there are not new skilled team players coming while having a farm system with an empty forward prospect base?
Acquiring picks.
and if they can get some disgruntled younger DeBrusks, or Kaakos without hurting their plan to ADD more draft picks, they try that too. But I don't see quantity return trades working in their favor if they trade quality in the rebuild. |

Frank Servavill of Daily face Off who wrote last week about Cat being at the top of his off season trade list has this podcast where he discusses the Hawks rebuild. It's at the two to nine minute mark.

In addition to discussing the Cat trade he also weighs in on Toews' future. |

Thank you....hard to argue with what he is saying regarding full on rebuild, time line, and paying huge money to another player when you are trying to be bad.

To me it just seems like Davidson isn't sold on him.....yet. If he was, he would be an untouchable, given his age/contract/etc......he may be wondering if it's time to sell high on Dach now and seeing what he can get for him in case he isn't taking the progressive steps this upcoming season.
He wouldn't be doing his job if he wasn't listening on anyone/everyone to maximize return and rebuild this roster. |

He was OK this year...playoff time....it was painful to watch a few games as he was getting torched by faster players which was always his game and his ability to keep up with them. No idea what he's thinking....does his pride kick in realizing he's a step slower and maybe to save face hang it up and go take care of his kid? OR does he come back for the last year to try and win again with Edmonton?
I 100% agree with you that MIke Smith was never the answer and if Edmonton is truly committed to winning the cup they'll 100% need to upgrade their goaltending asap because they aren't going to score 7 every night in the playoffs which they'll need to win with Smith. |

Well he wasn't healthy scratched in an elimination game like Kako was. |

I agree, but if KD gets rid of all his actual young pro hockey players he won't be around to long. |

I guess it would depend on if he gets better actual young pro hockey players, or actual better hockey players than are on the roster now.

I think this is some very key information regarding this draft:
“[But despite] what we’ve gone through as scouts in the NHL, as far as watching video and having video meetings with your staff, it has been worse for these kids because they’ve had to do it for [everything]. One player that we interviewed [at the combine] didn’t play hockey all of last year. The last two years haven’t been great for anybody, but more so the players because their development has been skewed a little bit.”
That lost development time makes it extra difficult to evaluate the 17- and 18-year-olds who make up the draft class this year. That uncertainty is why Doneghey doesn’t necessarily agree with the popular sentiment that the class is weaker than usual.
“I don’t know how you can judge that,” he said. |

Very true, but if they take a while to develop and things remain virtually the same he'll be fired by year 3 or 4.
Because i believe the same people who want a "full rebuild" won't have the patience for it, since most think our current young players suck. |

If Dach has fallen out of favor here, and Kakko in New York, would anyone do a straight up hockey trade for each other. |

Ok but what does Kako have to do with Dach and why does it matter? I could care less about Kako's development (unless Hawks traded for him) and more about how/if/when Dach starts to figure out and/or if not if the Hawks can flip him and actually get something for him before the rest of the league figures it out as well. |
